The Problem
Bringing Unsolved Mysteries to Netflix meant balancing nostalgia with a modern twist. With over 15 seasons of history behind the series, each of the nine new episodes required unique graphics tailored to the subject and tone—from Jack the Ripper’s 1800s London to a murder case in 2020. On top of that, many of the assets provided were old or low-resolution, demanding meticulous recreation in 4K. Managing these complexities while leading a team of animators to create over 600 visuals added an extra layer of difficulty.
The Solution
As the Graphics Creative Director, I led a team in producing animations such as maps, timelines, text messages, websites, and news clippings. Each episode required a distinct style, from weathered historical artifacts to sleek modern interfaces. Many assets had to be rebuilt from scratch, ensuring they not only fit the narrative but also looked crisp in 4K using Photoshop. Every animation had to feel organic to the mystery, enhancing the story without overshadowing it.
The Process
Pre-Production:
I worked closely with the producers and directors to analyze each episode’s tone and needs. We pinpointed where key graphics could drive the story—whether a map showing a suspect’s movements across Victorian London or a timeline mapping out text messages from a modern-day investigation. I aligned with my animation team to ensure everyone had a clear vision of how to execute each piece in a way that felt true to the story’s setting.
Animation & Design:
Throughout production, I provided hands-on guidance, reviewing drafts, troubleshooting creative challenges, and ensuring consistency across the episodes. Some animations required subtle aging techniques, such as weathered maps or sepia-toned news articles, while others demanded the sleek precision of social media interfaces or GPS data. Reworking low-quality images to meet 4K standards was particularly challenging but essential to maintain a seamless viewing experience. Every piece needed to engage the audience without distracting from the core narrative.
Post-Production:
After completing the animations, I collaborated with editors to fine-tune the pacing and ensure seamless integration into the episodes. Each graphic had to enhance, not overwhelm, the story’s flow. I also worked with my team on final tweaks—such as color correction and animation timing—to ensure every element matched the episode's specific tone.
In the end, the result was a polished collection of visuals tailored to each mystery, enriching the storytelling without breaking immersion. By blending the nostalgia of a classic series with the precision of modern graphics, my team and I created a viewing experience that resonated with new and old fans alike. Because with Unsolved Mysteries, no detail is too small—and no story is ever quite what it seems.
